BUTTE COLLEGE SKILLS CLUB STUDENTS TAKE HOME AWARDS AT STATE LEADERSHIP AND SKILLS CONFERENCE

Eight Butte College Skills Club students brought home awards at the 50th Annual SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference recently in San Diego. Each of the participants qualified for the statewide event by receiving first or second place awards at the SkillsUSA regional competition held in Sacramento. The following awards were won at the statewide competition:

Auto Service Technologies
Philip Ward: Silver Award, Solo
Erik Hedde: Bronze Award, Solo

Additive Manufacturing
James Bruce: Gold Award, Team of Two
Mattias Anderson: Gold Award, Team of Two

Engineering Technology Design
Majd Barchini: Gold Award, Team of Three
Andres Marquez: Gold Award, Team of Three
Jesse Patton: Gold Award, Team of Three

Technical Drafting
Christian Peralta: Bronze Award, Solo

“These students are more than just kids,” said Doug Conrad, Butte College Skills Club Advisor and Automotive Technology Instructor after the regional win. “They are the engineers, technicians and doers of tomorrow. We want these participants leading our future,” he said.

The Butte College Skills Club is open to any student or faculty who wants to join. In order to compete, club members must be active in an area of study that matches the available SkillsUSA competitions. There are a number of reasons a student might be interested in joining the Skills Club, said Conrad, including furthering their technical or leadership skills, building confidence, networking with industry partners or adding to their portfolio. Faculty would want to join, he said, so they can help their students succeed not only at school, but beyond.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The organization provides educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms. The theme for SkillsUSA 2016-2017 is Champions at Work - Preparing America's Skilled Workforce.
